I had seen Camille and her spouse the previous evening in a restaurant. Inspired by their Civil War Era costumes I decided to view the reenactment, the 150 anniversary, of the Battle of Olustee. [Also called Ocean Pond]
The Florida Trail runs right through the battle field encampment. Hundreds of local citizens, some from far off Georgia, dressed in Confederate uniforms crowded an open field ready for the mock battle. Ladies donned big hooped dresses, period Confederate naval offices showed off ancient torpedoes, Union Army look-alikes paraded proudly but this being the Deep South with their heads down a bit. This menagerie, and fifty riders posing as war cavalries, all greeted me as I wobbled into the Battlefield. Well actually, no one noticed me, I just happened to arrive at the park on this historic day!
The two hour was fun. I even ate a $# hamburger for lunch. All of that made up for a difficult morning swamp walk. But what of the 2007 men that perished at this very spot 150 years ago? Now that is really food for thought.
