“There was a guy doin what your doin but he had guns”
“Yea, that guy had two rifles and a pistol on his hip. They were fully loaded. The police finally got him.” That is how another construction worked along the highway described another American who was walking the previous summer. Apparently, he didn’t get too far.
This reminded me of my attempt to buy a shotgun in Fairbanks, Alaska. I don’t like guns [That is a long story from back in my Vietnam days]. I had selected the gun carefully, one that would take down a bear and allow me a quick second shot. When I went to pay for the gun, however, the store clerk refused to sell it to be because I was not a resident of Alaska. “Get some bear spray and bear bells” he recommended. I took his advice. And besides even if the bear was ugly I am not sure I could actually shoot it.
Today was a difficult day for walking. There were strong head winds. It was chilly, and occasionally drizzling. The beautiful scenery must have motivated me none the less to walk 25 miles.
