“We passed Fort Laramie in the night and in the morning found ourselves in the Black Hills with Laramie peak at our elbow looming vast and sol datary a deep dark indigo olive in hue ….. she was ninety miles away but seemed to be just a little beyond a low ridge” That’s how Twain put it in his 1891 tale of his travels through this great land, “Roughing It”.
