A Race
I love ultra races. They are long and require mental toughness. Of course you can’t legitimally attempt an ultra without sufficient training. With adequate preparation then I entered the Keys 100 mile race, a jaunt from Marathon to Key West which required walking the 100 mile distance within 24 hours.
In the early morning today I headed out, accompanied by 15 runners, and my trusty handler StevetheBeachbum, along Highway 1 in the Florida Keys. As usual the runners went out fast but this walker just hung in there hour after hour plugging along as the sun rose and the heat intensified. By the time midnight, and a new day, came around I had walked over 55 miles. The few stops to repair foot blisters, and a brief stop for lunch, cost me valuable time. Undaunted I continued on into the cool night.
