Dry and Soaked

It is the time of the year when rainfall can be unpredictable in Florida. The trail north of the highway 20 intersection was soggy and not fun. Then the terrain changed. Parallel to route 19 the trail was elevated on a berm, dry all the way.
The two thru hikers, one from Virginia and the other from St. Augustine, Fl., were breaking camp as I approached them at 7:30 AM. They had covered 23 miles the previous day when I had last seen them, and this was through tough, water inundated swamp. I walked west and north as the trail ran straight as an arrow along a pleasant sand road. The huge downpour, lasting for over an hour, blasted in just as I reached shelter. And that was it for the day.
