History Buff
The history along my route nags at me. It had to be fascinating to live in the Wyoming – Nebraska territories in the 17th and 18th centuries. Throughout these long hot days I often think of the thousands of easterners and Mormons who also wobbled through these plains even if they were shaking in dilapidated wooden wagons and struggling through mud and over wheel snapping sand stone.
I am dreaming of John Jacob Astor’s famous explorers the “Astorians” who in 1812, and kind of like me, discovered the manageable south pass to cross the Rocky Mountains. That led to the opening of the famous Oregon Trail which spirited 500,000 pioneers to the fertile farm lands of North West’s Columbia River.
Like Portugee, I am headed directly to Kearney. Alas, there is no one to signal about danger and distress. But that doesn’t mean I won’t continue dream about it.
