Horseshoe Creek Station

Lots of travelers including thousands of Mormon’s journeyed across this same trail. Most stopped here at this way station alongside a peaceful creek bed. Yet on in particular is remembered by history. His name is John “Portugee” Phillips. In December 1866 Phillips stopped here on a legendary 235 mile ride on horseback through a blizzard from Fort Kearney to alert the troops at Fort Laramie that the Kearney garrison was surrounded by hostile Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Sadly the Indian warriors won that battle.

As I stand here I can sense the excitement, the tension and the danger of that ride. Yes, I wish I had been along too. Of course I probably would have been walking.
