Walking Backwards.
Today I tackle the Big Cyprus Swamp from the north end along Alligator Alley, route 75. The first miles are easy as I follow what is known as a wagon trail. When I hit the real swamp the going is difficult. Large sections of the trail are buried in ankle deep water cushioned by thick mud. I am only able to walk one mile and a half in an hour. Occasionally black snakes, likely water moccasins slither in front of me. Of course I continue on. I am fatigued. Then majestically the turnaround point appears.
Late in the afternoon I see the large alligator blocking the wagon trail. Its mouth is closed but its eyes are alert. I cautiously move by him wary of his intentions but remembering it is me who is invading his territory. The noise of traffic along I-75 alerts me that civilization is near. It is only now that I am satisfied that I have conquered the Big Cyprus Swamp!
