L.O.G. [Logs, Oil and Gold]
In the cool early morning I walked 20 km outside of Prince George. It was a good warm-up for the month of walking still before me.
Large 18 wheeled trucks loaded with freshly cut logs roared y as I drove toward my walking start point 600 miles away on the Yukon border. British Columbia has a 2009 goal to sell one billion board feet of timber in 2009. Most of this harvest will go the China.
Later in the day at Smithers 200 kilometers west of Prince George four Chinese businessmen sat quietly eating observing the locals and tourist as they roamed the picturesque village. B.C. is rich in materials timber, precious metals and oil are sought after y all of the world’s industrial nations. Fortunately, the areas of greatest material wealth are difficult to reach preserving the wonderful natural beauty of this remote north western corner of Canada.
My cell phone works in Smithers. This will be the last cell phone coverage I will have for a few weeks. The need to have radio signals sent between cell phone towers seems so obsolete when hundreds of communications satellites orbit the sky not far above.
