The Florida Trail

The Florida Trail is a romantic, adventurous, sometimes scary, stretch of trail through the woods swamps and remote areas of Florida. The trail starts West of Fort Lauderdale about 150 miles north of Key West. It starts south to North in the Big Cypress Swamp, a desolate, ancient and very remote section of the Florida Everglades. It continues to wind zigzagedly did northward for over 1100 miles finally ending on the Florida Panhandle in Pensacola.
I couldn’t resist the lure of this magical trail even though I am a road warrior. Trails are not my thing, actually. But this one was too exciting to miss. The trail essentially is right along my long planned route from Point Barrow, Alaska to Key West. Florida. So it instead of traipsing along roads and dodging traffic, even on lonely back roads, I decided to challenge myself by walking The Trail. It was more convenient for me to walk from South to North. My present plan is to walk from the southern beginning of the plan about 800 miles north to Tallahassee, Florida. There I will pick up the roads again where I last left completed the latest stage of my walk. This also allows me to avoid the brutal winter now engulfing Central Missouri.
