We Struck Oil

It started in the enormous salt creek oil field near Casper. This was the largest cretaceous old reserve in the Rocky Mountains. Now little wells dot many corners of the eastern Wyoming landscape. The story goes that at first it was not difficult to tell where the precious black gold was waiting. Native Americans, trappers, settlers and then ranchers all made medicines and eve paint from the black gooey substance which bubbled to the surface in oozing pools.
Once the oil was pumped out of its hole it was then caged and hauled by wagon for refining in Casper. The refinery is still there today. But, hey, there is another black gold in abundance out here, coal!
