Westward HO
I am actually standing on the meager remains of the Oregon Trail. My back roads journey also follows what were once the the California and Mormon trails. I guess it was the “billionaire” of his day John Jacob Astor, who was one of the first to recognize the great potential for crossing the American continent by wagon and horseback. Looking to make more money in his west coast fur trading empire he is the one who commissioned the Astorians to find a way across the Rockies. In 1821 the Astor man Jon Stewart succeeded and travelled all the way to St Louis. The rest is history. The great migration and development of the West had begun. And here I am following suit enjoying every second of my once in a lifetime west to east walking adventure.
